Amnesty International has called on the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to protect human rights defenders, who continue to be arbitrarily detained by security agencies and subjected to an alarming number of death threats.
In its briefing "Human Rights Defenders under attack in the Democratic Republic of Congo", Amnesty International documents the persecution faced by eight prominent human rights defenders in the DRC, harassment the organization fears will intensify in the build-up to 2011 presidential and national elections.
Human rights defenders in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) play a crucial role in a country racked by instability and conflict. They draw national and international attention to human rights abuses in the DRC and promote awareness of human rights among the Congolese population. However, instead of addressing human rights concerns, DRC officials at the national and provincial levels continue to attack the organizations that raise them. This campaign digest includes cases which illustrate the threats, assaults and arbitrary arrests suffered by human rights defenders.
