The
Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) is strongly
bothered by the recurrence of harassing journalists by the Israeli
Occupation Authorities, considering it a blatant violation to the press
freedom which became in a deplorable situation under the authorities’
repetitive actions of repressing and harassing journalists and opinion
makers.
On Saturday 21 January, the Israeli authorities have refused to allow the journalist Mohamed Basharat to travel to Jordan through Al-Karama passage to finish some procedures relating to his study abroad without giving any reasons for such prevention.
This is not the first action done to harass Basharat, a correspondent in a number of news websites, focusing on prisoners’ affairs, for he was taken from his home, in Tamon village in the West Bank, by the IOF on 10 July 2011, then was released in August.
Journalists in Palestine suffer the deliberate harassment against them by the occupation forces, represented in continuous detentions and the arbitrary procedures taken against them. On 28 December 2011, an Israeli military force raided the house of Amin Abdel Aziz Abo Warda, media professional and blogger, in Nablus city, and illegally detained him up till now.
Also, Ra’ed Alsharif, journalist and broadcaster in Radio Marah [joy] has been referred to the Israeli Military court of Ofer, his case was adjourned for several times, the last of which was on 4 Jan. 2012. The prosecution charged Alsharif with “monitoring the actions of the occupation army while raiding some Palestinian areas”
ANHRI said: “harassing journalists is a blatant violation to the right to freedom of expression and the press freedom in Palestine, which are already suffering from the continuous violence of the IOF. Palestinian journalists are working amidst detentions, targeting and bombs”
ANHRI also added “the recurrence of harassing journalists and opinion makers is a systematic campaign aims at repressing their freedoms and gagging them in order not to expose the violations the IOFs are committing against the Palestinian people’s human rights.”
