At a February 10 press conference, the Tlachinollan Center for Human Rights of the Montaña and partner organizations announced a campaign to press the Mexican government to ensure justice for human rights violations committed by the Mexican military.
The announcement comes days after the Mexican government pulled out of discussions to implement the rulings of the Inter-American Court in the cases of two indigenous women who were raped and tortured by the military. The binding court rulings require that these and other human rights violations committed by the military in Mexico be resolved by civilian institutions.
The Tlachinollan Center and other groups presented a letter signed by Nobel Laureates, artists, and scholars from around the world, including Jody Williams, Mairead Maguire, Wangari Maathai, Rigoberta Menchu, and Betty Williams, calling for cases to be transferred to civilian jurisdiction.
