The major Dutch human rights medal the
Geuzenpenning has this year been awarded to Russian human rights
activist Gregory Shvedov.
The Geuzen Resistance 1940-1945 Foundation, which first awarded the medal in 1987, has announced that this year’s ceremony will take place in Vlaardingen on 13 March.
Shvedov has been fighting for human rights in Russia and the former Soviet Republics for years. Shvedov is editor-in-chief of the Caucasian Knot, an independent regional news site.
Earlier recipients of the Geuzenpenning medal include the recently
deceased former Czech president Vaclav Havel, Colombian politician
Ingrid Betancourt and the organisation Human Rights Watch.
