Hamman Haddad: arbitrary detention

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that the Syrian authorities have refused to confirm the whereabouts of human rights defender and writer Hammam Haddad, who was arbitrarily detained on 5 May 2008. Hammam Haddad has been active in publicising cases of human rights violations in Syria and has also worked to support victims of human rights violations and their families.

Posted 11/07/2008 Hammam Haddad was reportedly arrested on 5 May 2008 by state security forces at his home in Damascus. No reason has been given for his arrest and his whereabouts are as yet unknown.
Front Line believes that the arbitrary detention of Hammam Haddad is directly related to his legitimate and peaceful activities in defence of human rights, in particular his exercise of the right to freedom of expression. In view of reports of Hammam Haddad’s detention and the fact that his whereabouts are currently unknown, Front Line is gravely concerned for his physical and psychological integrity and believes that the proceedings against him may form part of a campaign to restrict the work of human rights defenders in Syria.
