SendThe Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on human right defenders, currently, Mrs Hina Jilani and her Office in Geneva receives alleged violations of the UN Declaration on Human Right Defenders. To submit an allegation, one must follow Guidelines for submitting alleged violations of the Declaration on human rights defenders to the Special Representative.

Member States of the UN have a responsibility for the protection of defenders, by virtue of International Human Rights Law which ties them to specific commitments in favour of defenders such as:
- The UN Declaration on Human Right Defenders, UN General Assembly Resolution adopted by consensus in 1998
- The European Union Guidelines on Defenders, adopted by the 25 Member States of the European Union in 2004
- In Africa, one can add the Resolution on the Protection of defenders in Africa adopted by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in 2004
