Laetitia Bader (EHAHRDP) on the challenges of human rights defenders protection in Ethiopia

Africa / East and Horn of Africa / Ethiopia

Tuesday 11 January 2011

Since it’s been adopted in 2009, the Ethiopian Proclamation on Charities and Associations has put human rights defenders under pressure. In fact, the proclamation says that every organization or charity which receives more than 10% of its funding from abroad is not allowed to do human rights work. In a country as heavily aid-dependent as Ehtiopia, it creates an obvious obstacle for the protection of HRD’s.

Laetitia Bader, Advocacy Officer at the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project (Kampala), explains the challenges met by HRD’s in this country and what the European Union should do to address these challenges.
