Detention and Probable Arrest of Mehmet Tanhan

Mr. Mehmet Tanhan, the former Mayor of Nusaybin District of Mardin Province for ten years between 1999 and 2009, was detained on 18 October 2011 and still in detention concerning an investigation that had been launched 2008 regarding his activities as a mayor. 60 year-old Mehmet Tanhan previously had two heart illnesses and he had an angiography. The lawyer of Tanhan stated that his client has constant pains in his chest. He should be under regular medical consultation.
The Human Rights Association has been seriously concerned about the health of Mehmet Tanhan.
Actions requested:
Please write to the authorities of the Republic of Turkey urging them to:
i. Guarantee in all circumstances the physical and psychological integrity of Mr. Mehmet Tanhan;
ii. Release immediately and unconditionally Mr. Mehmet Tanhan;
iii. Put an end to any kind of harassment – including at the judicial level – against Mr. Mehmet Tanhan.
