Mexico : Impunity for the assassination of Jyri Jaakkola and Bety Cariño

Latin America / Mexico

Tuesday 11 January 2011

On 27 April 2010, Jyri Jaakkola, a Finnish international observer, was shot dead as he was on his way to San Juan Copala, a village of Triqui indigenous people which has declared itself as an autonomous municipality. The attack is thought to have been perpetrated by UBISORT, a paramilitary group. Bety Cariño, human rights defender from the local organization CACTUS has also been assassinated.

The convoy aimed at delivering food and supplies to the autonomous municipality which is cut off by paramilitary groups. Jyri’s parents went to Mexico in order to demand justice for their son. Their lawyer, David Peña, explains the situation faced by the Triqui indigenous people.
