Protecting the human rights of Internally Displaced Persons and promoting their organisational processes

Protecting human rights of IDP - PBI

In June 2002, the Peace Brigades International European Office organised a seminar in Brussels on the theme: “International Field Protection of Internally Displaced Persons : Needs and Challenges, Actors and Strategies”, which resulted in the drafting of a set of recommendations on how European states can enhance the protection of the human rights of internally displaced persons .

In 2005, three years on, the need to address these topics continued to be greatly felt and specialists working on IDP issues are increasingly aware of the importance of consulting displaced communities and their leaders at all levels of decision making. Peace Brigades International therefore decided to follow up with a new international seminar.

The second seminar was aiming at providing leaders of displaced communities and their local partners with the opportunity to exchange views and experiences on organisational processes for the protection of the rights of internally displaced persons, as well as to collectively define strategies to improve the protection of displaced communities worldwide.
