African defenders

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights adopted a Resolution on the Protection of Human Rights Defenders in Africa in 2004, and nominated at its 38th ordinary session , from 21st november to 5th December 2005 in Banjul, Gambia the commissioner Reine Alapini Gansouas as Special Rapporteur on Defenders .

The African Charter on Human and People’s Rights authorises individuals and NGOs to Present a petition to the ACHPR for Human Rights violations. Certain conditions outlined in Article 56 of the Charter, must be respected .

American Defenders

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) located in Washington, adopted some Resolutions and created a defenders unit which receives the petition on the circumstances of the American hemisphere defenders.
