The PEC warns of a serious crisis inherent in International Humanitarian Law An impediment to the Protection of Journalists and freedom of expression
In a report presented to the new Human Rights Council (HRC), the Press Emblem Campaign warned of a crisis of serious magnitude that is inherent in existing International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and which impedes the protection of journalists and curtails freedom of expression.
A large number of journalists were killed during the last three years while covering the war and the insurgency in Iraq. Since March 2003 Iraq has witnessed an international armed conflict which turned into an internal conflict in the presence of foreign forces. However, media casualties have also occurred in other conflict regions like the Philippines, Columbia, and Sri Lanka, in conflicts which are internal in nature.
