The Netherlands/Honduras : Tulip Award 2010

America / Europe / European Union / Honduras / Latin America / Netherlands

Tuesday 11 January 2011

In November 2010, the Dutch government awarded the 2010 Human Rights Tulip Award to Bertha Oliva de Nativí of Honduras, for her struggle for the rights of relatives of people who "disappeared" in Honduras between 1979 and 1989.

Selected among 170 nominees, Mrs Oliva founded with other women who had lost close family members the Committee of Relatives of the Disappeared in Honduras (Comité de Familiares de Detenidos Desaparecidos en Honduras, COFADEH) in 1982, one year after her husband was arrested and then disappeared.

Before giving her the award, Minister of Foreign Affairs Uri Rosenthal said : ’You have shown extraordinary courage. I wish everyone who suffers from repression the freedom for which you have fought so hard.’

An emblematic human rights defender in Central America, Mrs Oliva is now one of the main voices of the resistance to the military coup of June 2009 in Honduras.
