The documentary gives an overview of the major role played by Human Rights associations of the province of South-Kivu, and especially in Bukavu where the associative movement is particularly active.
During the war years, and in the absence of legitimate and effective institutions, the human rights defenders and the Congolese journalists were, at the risk of their life, those men and women who listed and informed of the abuses of all the parties to the conflict.
Among these defenders is Pascal Kabungulu Kibembi, murdered on July 31st, 2005. Pascal Kabungulu worked for the “Ligue des Droits de l’Homme dans la région des Grands Lacs” ( LDGL) and had been the leader of the NGO “HÉRITIERS DE LA JUSTICE”in Bukavu.
The work of defenders and journalists is essential to guarantee truth, justice and compensations for the millions victims of the conflict.
The Congolese government and the international community have obligations of protection towards Human rights defenders: they made commitments within the United Nations and within the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights.
