Female radio journalist roughed up, threatened with murder by Nepal Congress Party activists in Surkhet

(FNJ/IFEX) - Tila Bhandari, a news correspondent of Nepal FM 91.8 radio station, was manhandled and threatened by activists of the Nepali Congress Party (NC) on 10 May 2008 at Harre in the Surkhet district in mid-western Nepal.
Bhandari had reached Harre to collect news about a “bandh” - a general strike - in Surkhet, called by the NC. In the meantime NC cadres, around 50 in number, manhandled and threatened to kill her if she disseminated news about their activities, said Saroj Dahal, president of the FNJ’s Nepal FM chapter. Dahal also informed FNJ that they took away Bhandari’s camera memory card.
FNJ denounced the incident, saying that it was irresponsible behavior on the part of a major political party at a time when the country is preparing to draft a new constitution. FNJ insists that the NC should respect press freedom, freedom of expression and the right to information.
