EU-India Summit: Trade unions call for pressing rights issues including Burma to be on the agenda

Brussels, 23 November 2007 (ITUC Online): On the eve of next week’s EU-India Summit taking place in New Delhi on 30 November, the ITUC and the ETUC have written to the European Commission to propose 3 items that need to be placed on the table for the discussions.

According to the trade unions, the Summit must be used to press the government of India to recall its international obligations on Burma, in pursuance of ILO and UN resolutions to achieve respect for workers’ rights and other human rights, rather than to increase its economic assistance and involvement with that country.

Regarding the issue of labour or social chapters in the EU-India trade negotiations, trade unions have called on the EU and India to confirm that the social chapter is an integral part of the agreement.

Finally, trade unions are urging the Indian government to end its support for international and national legal measures against international organizations which are seeking to bring serious violations of human rights into the public domain.
