The Iranian journalist, researcher and lawyer Shadi Sadr (35) won the 2009 Human Rights Defenders Tulip for her courage in defending the rights of women in Iran.
She is the founder of Raahi, an organisation that provides legal advice to poor women, and a leading figure in the campaign against stoning. She has been arrested twice for her participation in defense of women’s rights.
The first Tulip had been awarded to Justine Masika Bihamba from Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Ms Masika runs the "Synergie des femmes victimes de violences sexuelles SFVS" organisation dedicated to stopping the widespread rape of women in the conflict zones of eastern DRC.
Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen have presented the award in The Hague on Monday 9 November.The award consists of a bronze sculpture of the Human Rights Tulip and a personal prize of €10,000.
This award is a result of the human rights strategy, as set out in the foreign policy of The Netherlands.
